Is Barry Manilow Jewish | Religion, Ethnicity And Family

Publish date: 2024-04-26

Barry Manilow, a legendary American musician and composer, had a remarkable seven-decade career that had a long-lasting impact on the music industry.

Throughout his remarkable career, he has contributed to the world with iconic songs including “Looks Like We Made It,” “Mandy,” “Could It Be Magic,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “Copacabana (At the Copa).”

The fact that he has released 51 Adult Contemporary Chart Top 40 songs is a tremendous accomplishment. Of these songs, 36 reached the top 20, 28 reached the top 10, and 13 achieved the coveted number one position.

Additionally, he has contributed his compositional and performing talents to a variety of musicals, movies, and commercial projects for well-known brands including McDonald’s, Pepsi-Cola, and Band-Aid.

Is Barry Manilow Jewish? Religion

Now, Barry’s devoted fan base makes assumptions about and expresses interest in his religious convictions.

Manilow is not a practicing Jew, but his family history shows an unusual blending of religious traditions. His parents were both Irish and Jewish.

His father, an Irishman, was most likely raised in the Irish Catholic tradition. On the other hand, Manilow’s mother was of Jewish descent.

Further genealogical investigation revealed that his paternal grandpa was Jewish and that his maternal forebears were Jewish immigrants from Russia. Interestingly, his maternal grandmother was of Irish Catholic ancestry.

He was mostly raised Jewish despite having a mixed heritage. Early in his childhood, his father left the family, and he grew up immersed in Jewish rites and traditions.

His maternal grandparents imparted to him the values of courtesy, consideration, and sensitivity during his Bar Mitzvah, an important Jewish coming-of-age event.

Ethnicity of Barry Manilow

The well-known singer and songwriter Manilow is of mixed origin and hails from many ethnicities. His ancestry may notably be found in Limerick, Ireland, proving that he is half-Irish.

Barry Alan Pincus, who was born on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, identifies as an American. During his early years, he was reared by his Jewish immigrants from Russia and his mother, Edna.

Despite having Irish ancestry, he previously claimed that “the Irish part of me did not exist.” It had been lost and disregarded.

In 1961, Manilow graduated from the now-defunct Eastern District High School with a diploma. He originally began taking studies at the City College of New York before momentarily enrolling at the New York College of Music. To sustain himself financially, he also worked for CBS.

Family of Barry Manilow

Barry was born to his well-known parents, Harold Kelliher and Edna Manilow. At his mother’s persuasion, his father, an Irish truck driver, changed his last name to Pincus.

The name change recognized a Jewish ancestor of his father’s from the 1800s. The singer’s parents tragically divorced when he was pretty young. Due to his mother’s Jewish family, Barry was also not allowed to have a relationship with his father.

In 1964, while still a teenager, he wed Susan Deixler, his high school love. They had a divorce in 1966, which caused them to part ways.

He didn’t begin dating TV executive Garry Kief, who would later serve as his manager, until 1978.

Barry and Garry exchanged vows after same-sex partnerships became legal in California in 2014. Their relationship and his sexual orientation had been kept a secret, but in 2015, the news of their marriage made headlines across the world.
